The long-anticipated Premier League season will be underway with the weekend fixtures ahead. In this article, we will get you ready for the new season. Not only will we be highlighting the potentially tricky fixtures of the opening day, but we will also give our verdict on who will be top of the Premier League after the first month of fixtures.
Are you Pikked and ready for the new season?
WHAT WILL PIKKED PIKK FOR THE FIRST GAME WEEK OF THE NEW SEASON?
Liverpool to beat Leeds.
What an eye-watering clash to begin the new season. Leeds will be welcomed back into the Premier League with open arms, after 17 years of absence. The two clubs have held a great rivalry in the past. Leeds will be looking to cause an upset to the reigning Premier League champions. Liverpool have spent very little in the transfer window, and their lacklustre performance in the Community Shield could be a cause for concern. Nevertheless, Liverpool will play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on matchday 2 and Arsenal at Anfield on matchday 3. Therefore, Liverpool looks a good bet for this game, as it will be hard to predict the outcome of their next two matches.
Leicester to beat West Brom.
West Brom have been a yo-yo club since the birth of the Premier League. Baggies fans are longing for a prolonged stint in the Premier League this time out. However, they face a difficult task against Leicester. The Foxes got off to a flying start last season with Brendan Rodgers at the helm. Nonetheless, their form dwindled after the lockdown period. Losing Ben Chilwell and without any marquee signings, it will be a miracle if Leicester pip last season's 5th position. Rodgers' men face Burnley in matchday 2 and Manchester City in-game week 3; both will be difficult tasks to conquer. That's why we think Leicester are a good bet against the Baggies on the opening day of the season.
West Ham and Newcastle to draw.
One to avoid or use you Super Draw boost: These two clubs are destined for another mid-table finish this season. Newcastle has bolstered their ranks with Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis, which Geordie fans are buzzing about. However, both teams will take this game cautiously knowing that a bad start will thwart their confidence. It's a draw from us.
DON'T HATE US ARSENAL FANS
Fulham and Arsenal to draw.
one to avoid or use your Super Draw boost: Of course, you can only pick three games to predict on (unless you opted for your 2 extra Pikks booster). Yet we think that Fulham could cause an upset at Craven Cottage. With some Arsenal players' futures in the balance and Arteta still unsure on his best eleven, we think Fulham could capitalise on the Gunners' uncertainty. The tight pitch at The Cottage could be crucial in Fulham nullifying Arsenal's attacking threats (Maybe select the Super Draw boost for major points). See our Twitter thread which gives further reasons why Arsenal could be in for a tricky afternoon.
PIKKED'S PREDICTION FOR SEPTEMBER.
From studying the fixtures, it appears that both Tottenham and Manchester United have a nice run of games in September. Mourinho's men will still be looking to impress their coach, who was appointed at the halfway stage of last season. Spurs have a tough opening fixture at home to Everton. The Toffees have made some impressive signings in Allan, James and Doucoure. Yet, it could take them a while to etch an understanding of their roles and develop an on-pitch relationship. Tottenham then play Southampton on Matchday 2 and Newcastle on Matchday 3. Although both of these teams have now cemented themselves as Premier League regulars, we think that Tottenham have the firepower to get at least 7 points from the three games.
Both Manchester clubs don't play on the opening day of the season, due to their commitments in last season's European competitions. However, Manchester United play Crystal Palace on gameweek 2 and Brighton on gameweek 3. We think they will pick up maximum points in both games. Manchester City, on the other hand, have a tricky test away against Wolves and then play Leicester. Pep's men would love to get maximum points from both games, yet we think they may drop points in one of the fixtures.
CAN KLOPP'S MEN DO IT AGAIN?
The reigning champions Liverpool, appear to have the trickiest opening 3 fixtures of all. The scousers' Premier League pedigree will be put to the test in the first game against Leeds. Matchday 2 presents a spine-tingling tie against big spenders, Chelsea. Matchday 3 sees them pipped against Community Shield victors, Arsenal. Klopp's men were by far the best team in the league last season; still, the first 3 games will be a challenge. We think Liverpool will likely drop points in one of these games but will still be sitting pretty coming into October.
PIKKED'S DARK HORSE FOR SEPTEMBER.
Sheffield United have made some shrewd signings this summer, even though they lost their talismanic keeper, Dean Henderson. The acquisition of Aaron Ramsdale will surely keep their impressive defensive record intact. Furthermore, adding the impressive Derby duo Max Lowe and Jayden Bogle will add some depth to the squad. The Wales International, Nathan Ampadu, will also add some fluidity from defence into midfield which the Blades lacked last season. Finally, Oliver Burke joins Chris Wilders men to add some pace in attack, making this a great transfer window.
Sheffield United play Wolves on the opening day of the season. If they can get a result again Nuno Espirito's men, then they play Aston Villa and Leeds in the next two fixtures. We think Sheffield United will build upon their debut season and get off to a flying start in September.
There are some tasty Premier League fixtures in the opening month of the season. We believe that Tottenham have a good chance to be top of the table under Jose Mourinho going into October.
West Brom will struggle with fixtures against Leicester, Everton and Chelsea. Nevertheless, it's the Premier League, the most competitive league in the world. Who are we to say?
